Broken Compass Woodworking is a company owned and operated by Kyle Levy. Kyle moved to Nashville, TN from his hometown of Hicksville, Ohio in 2013 to pursue a career in music. As he pursued his music dream, Kyle also clung to his midwestern roots and began to supplement income by working as a handyman and doing small remodels such as bathrooms and kitchens.

Through this work clients began asking more of Kyle than simple punch lists; building custom tables or cabinets for clients became a normal part of the business. These projects developed a passion for fine woodworking in Kyle, and he began offering custom woodworking and individually commissioned items. As word spread through Nashville about the Kyle’s ability to build quality custom furniture, the demand for custom commissioned items became great enough for the business to make a full shift into fine woodworking and leave handy-manning in the rear view mirror.

What about the name, Broken Compass Woodworking? While working through his lifelong battle with ADHD, Kyle decided to embrace the flaw of this disorder and make it something good. In experiencing the hurdles of anxiety such as everyday decision making, and imposter syndrome. Kyle felt much like a broken compass. In September 2018, Kyle officially left behind his former handyman company(ICanFixThatForYou), rebranded, and created Broken Compass Woodworking.

“I wanted a voice that could shed light on the fact that we are all flawed but not rendered useless. Even a broken compass still continues to move or spin. It continues to always try to find it’s true North”

Broken Compass Woodworking builds high quality cabinets, tables, shelves, banquettes, and other custom furniture pieces. BCW also incorporates some welding as needed, and will often take on more obscure commissions, like set props for music videos or events. As BCW continues to grow, Kyle welcomes the challenge of growing his business while maintaining the high level of quality he and his clients have come to expect.

“ I am but a broken compass. And, this is, Broken Compass Woodworking.”
